Air Force coach spends emotional time with family of cancer victim Lauren Hill

Air Force basketball coach Dave Pilipovich and his wife, Kelly, spent the weekend at Dick Vitale’s gala in Sarasota, Fla., that raised more than $2 million for the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

The couple also traveled to Las Vegas to participate in a fundraiser put on by Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger.

The part of the weekend that had the most impact on Pilipovich was sharing a table at Vitale’s event with the parents of Lauren Hill, the Mount St. Joseph's women's basketball player who saw action this past season as she battled an inoperable brain tumor.

Hill, 19, died on April 10.

“It was pretty emotional, being with her parents when they showed a tribute video,” said Pilipovich, a father of two. “They were such good people. The mom said it’s been one thing after another and they’re ready for some normalcy. They're not doing any of this for publicity, but to use this platform to raise awareness and raise some money to help somebody else. What a healthy girl she was. They showed us some pictures before it all came about…

“It was a great event, but it also makes you appreciate what you have.”
