Darvin Ham to speak at Saginaw Promise fundraiser

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI -- The annual fundraiser for the Saginaw Promise will welcome two Saginaw natives on Wednesday, June 14 at the Horizons Conference Center, 6200 State, in Saginaw Township.
"An Evening with Darvin Ham" with special guest Mark Zimmerman will raise money for to provide last-dollar scholarships for graduating Saginaw seniors who will pursue postsecondary education in Michigan.
Ham, assistant coach of the Atlanta Hawks, played for eight years in the NBA - winning a championship with the Detroit Pistons.
During the 1996 NCAA Tournament, Ham shattered a backboard with a slam dunk. He helped advance Texas Tech to the Sweet 16 and was featured on a cover on Sports Illustrated.
According to a press release, Ham will share experiences and stories about growing up in Saginaw, his NCAA and NBA basketball careers, moving from player to coach and what it takes to recruit, coach and put together a winning team effort in a highly competitive sport.
Zimmerman will speak about his career, which includes many years as General Manager of the Georgia World Congress Center, the fourth largest convention center in the country, which also houses the arenas where both the Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Falcons play.
Under Zimmerman's leadership, the Center has hosted many of the Top 200 Trade Shows in the country, as well as the 1988 Democratic National Convention, 1994 and 2000 Super Bowls and several NCAA Final Four Basketball Championship events.
According to organizers, the Saginaw Promise has awarded $600,000 in scholarships to 447 students since 2012.
